The Durant Rotary Club provides a free personal dictionary to every third grade student attending schools in Bryan County, Oklahoma. Durant club members offer these books to the children with the hope that the area communities with benefit in the future as these children develop better reading, speaking, and writing skills. These skills will improve student performance in other subjects as well. Receiving the dictionaries from Rotary members provides the students with potential models for future career choice and an example of community service. These young people are shown how adults in their community can serve others they may not even know in small but valuable ways. As part of the presentation of dictionaries, the club members briefly talk about the service Rotarians provide both locally and worldwide. With each year’s set of dictionaries, the Durant Rotary Club members plant small “seeds” of knowledge and goodwill.
